In the United States, there are ten species of butterflies that hibernate during the cold winter months. Provide them with a safe haven to rest in for the season. This wooden hibernation home was designed to serve as a safe shelter that simulated their natural habitat. Place the box in a shaded area around trees, flowers, or a garden.
The box should be mounted between 3.5 to 4 inches off the ground on a pole or post. To attract butterflies, loosely place pine bark mulch or natural tree bark in the box. Place the house in a vertical position to allow easy access for the butterflies.
